Popular DinoWalk Program To Be Held May 2-3

CULPEPER, VA: The Museum of Culpeper History has announced the date of their popular annual DinoWalk program.  Dino lovers of all ages should mark their calendars for Friday and Saturday, May 2-3, for this year’s event.  The popular event enables attendees to tour a portion of one of the largest concentrations of dinosaur tracks in the world.

Uncovered by accident by quarry operators in 1989, nearly 5,000 tracks were uncovered and recorded by scientists. “Tracks from Culpeper are in the collections of every major natural history museum in the world,” according to the museum’s Executive Director John Christiansen.  Although many tracks were later removed, several hundred are still visible at the base of the quarry.

The museum has been organizing tours of the quarry site since 2015. The tracks are located in an active quarry site on private property owned by the Luck Stone Corporation. “We are very grateful that Luck Stone allows us access to this site once each year for public tours,” says Christiansen. “This is our largest event of the year and there is a tremendous amount of interest.  The quarry is very generous to schedule this around their operations and allow us to hold this program over two days. They have an incredible staff that works closely with us to make this a safe and successful event each year.  Not only do they allow us access to the site, but they donate staffing and logistical support during the event.”

The program’s popularity creates a great demand for tickets every year.  “Due to safety concerns and the fact that there is limited parking at the quarry, we only have about 250 available passes per day each year,” explains Christiansen.  “Even by limiting sales to one pass per purchase the demand is just much, much greater than the supply and passes have sold out almost immediately with online sales the past few years.”  The event was expanded to two days in 2023 but there was still a long waiting list of hopeful attendees.

New to the program this year is a Member Day on Friday, May 2.  “We’re making passes for Friday, May 2 available exclusively to members of the museum,” said Christiansen.  “Our team hopes that this will give our members a better chance of attending the program this year.  Any passes that are unsold for that day will be made available to the general public.”  Tickets for the member day will be available for purchase online on April 5.

Passes for Saturday, May 3 will be available for online purchase on April 12.  The cost of a pass will be $50.

Detailed event information is available on the museum’s website at https://culpepermuseum.com/dinowalk3/.  The museum is also looking for volunteers to assist with both days of the program.
