Cedar Mountain Battlefield Annual Living History

Cedar Mountain Battlefield Foundation hosts the Cedar Mountain Anniversary Living History Weekend the first weekend in August to commemorate the August 9, 1862 battle. Visitors will be able to choose from a variety of immersive activities designed to share the stories of Civil War soldiers and civilians before, during, and after the battle, the bloodiest day in Culpeper’s history. 

The event commemorating the August 9, 1862 battle is held at the battlefield along James Madison Highway/Route 15 south of Culpeper at 9465 General Winder Road. The event is open to visitors of all ages and there is a $10 per car admission fee which helps support educational programs. 

Schedule of Events

Friday, August 9th
7:00 PM – History Talk about Maj. Gen Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson

Frank O’Reilly, National Park Service Historian, author, and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson expert. The event will be held at the Cedar Run Baptist Church located at 21210 Old Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701. Tickets are $20/person and advanced registration is required to attend.

Saturday, August 10th

• 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM – Children’s Civil War Camp
  Advanced registration is required. 
• 10:00 AM – Children’s Activities
• 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM – Exhibits & Woodworking Demonstrations
  Cedar Mountain Battlefield Foundation Interpretative Center will be open with children’s activities, exhibits, and woodworking demonstrations.
• 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM – Artillery Demonstration
• 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM  – Real-time tour of the 1862 Battle of Cedar Mountain
  Tour will be given by historian Greg Mertz. Tickets are $10/person and parking fee is included. Advanced registration is required.

Sunday, August 11th

• 10:00 AM – Union Army Demonstration
• 10:30 AM – Confederate Artillery Demonstration
• 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM – Rockbridge Artillery Demonstration
