Mechanic Assistant
Under the guidance of the Transit Manager, the Mechanic Assistant will be responsible for assisting with service and maintenance of the Central Region fleet and facility. The goal of this position is to ensure the highest level of safety for Virginia Regional Transit employees and it's passengers. This employee must have a commitment to Virginia Regional Transit’s vision, mission and goals. Candidates MUST BE 21 years of age.

Essential Functions:
- Check-in with the Mechanic daily to confirm the service and maintenance schedule.
- Perform minor service and maintenance such as oil changes, fueling, tire rotations, cleaning and detailing buses, etc.
- Work with mechanic on major service issues such as replacing engine parts and bodywork repair.
- Maintain the shop office, bathroom and bays to provide a clean and safe work area and environment.
- Facilitate vehicle delivery and retrieval for service of buses when on route.
- Assist with bus advertising installation and removal.
- Maintain a monthly preventative maintenance and safety inspection program for the facilities, grounds and bus shelters including cleaning and minor repairs.
- Perform minor electrical maintenance to include, but not be limited to, replacement or repair of fixtures (ex. Incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs and tubes, ballast, fuses, minor appliances, cords, switches, outlets, etc.) using appropriate hand, power and specialty tools.
- Perform minor plumbing maintenance (ex. Repair faucets, unclog of drains and toilets etc.)
- Perform painting, carpentry and minor masonry work (ex. Preparing surfaces and using brush, roller, sprayer to apply stains and paint, fitting locks and handles, etc.)
- Perform minor grounds keeping and snow removal (ex. removal of debris/leaves, asphalt repair, spread sand/salt and operate snow removal equipment.)
- Ensure facilities are in compliance with all federal, state and local safety regulations.
- Detect and report defective materials or questionable conditions to the Transit Manager.
Secondary Functions:
- Serve as a backup vehicle operator.
- Some travel is required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education & Training:
A minimum of a high school diploma or GED preferred. Any combination of training, education and experience equivalent to one year of basic automobile service and maintenance. Facility and grounds related maintenance experience with a basic understanding of electrical, plumbing, and carpentry is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Maintain acceptable driving record with CDL class B license with a passenger and airbrake endorsements (or ability to obtain CDL with endorsements within 90 days). Must maintain a valid DOT medical examiners certificate listed as interstate non-excepted. The employee must also possess strong verbal and written communication skills. Required to be familiar with and use all hand tools and power tools common to the skills listed above.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
As a normal function of the job, the employees periodically kneel, push, grasp, pull, bend, walk for short distances, and climb ladders. The employee may work in extreme outside weather conditions (heat and cold). The employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals including cleaning supplies, paint, solvent and lubricating fluids, etc. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The employee may require normal hearing protection with ear plugs due to noise level at times.
Post Conditional Offer Contingencies: Employment is contingent on satisfactory results of a drug screening, background check and a valid driver's license in the state of Virginia or in a nearby state of residence. For example: Maryland, West Virginia and North Carolina. Applicants are required to pass an employer paid DOT Medical Physical.
