Position Summary
The Culpeper Literacy Council is seeking a dedicated, organized, and engaging part-time Evening ESL Instructor to teach English to adult learners and provide administrative support for the effective operation of our ESL program.
The primary focus of this position is delivering consistent, high-quality English instruction in a welcoming, community-based environment. The instructor will also assist with student records, assessments, enrollment, reporting, communication, and other program-related administrative responsibilities.
This position is ideal for someone who is passionate about adult education, enjoys working with learners from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and can balance classroom instruction with basic program administration.
Instructional Responsibilities
- Teach adult ESL classes three to four evenings per week, depending on enrollment, program needs, and instructor availability.
- Prepare and deliver engaging, student-centered lessons appropriate to students’ English proficiency levels.
- Assess student progress and adjust instruction to meet individual and classroom needs.
- Create a positive, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
- Maintain accurate attendance records and basic classroom documentation.
- Communicate regularly with the Director of Programs regarding student progress, classroom needs, and instructional concerns.
- Assist with selecting, organizing, and updating curriculum materials and classroom resources.
- Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and other instructors to support consistent and effective instruction.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Assist with student registration, orientation, placement testing, and enrollment.
- Maintain accurate student files, attendance records, assessment results, and program documentation.
- Prepare and submit required reports and student-progress information.
- Communicate with students regarding class schedules, attendance, registration, and program expectations.
- Help coordinate student assessments and track educational progress.
- Support compliance with grant, funding, and program-reporting requirements.
- Assist with preparing instructional materials, making copies, and organizing classroom resources.
- Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and program-planning activities.
- Perform other reasonable administrative duties as assigned to support ESL program operations.
Qualifications
- TESOL, TEFL, CELTA, or a related ESL teaching certification preferred.
- Experience teaching adult English-language.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with staff and volunteers.
- Cultural sensitivity and comfort working with adults from diverse backgrounds.
- Basic computer skills, including email, electronic recordkeeping, and document preparation.
- Dependability, flexibility, patience, and a commitment to adult learners.
Schedule
- Classes are held in the evenings, generally beginning at 6:00 p.m.
- Each class is approximately 90 minutes.
- The anticipated teaching schedule is four evenings per week.
- The final schedule may vary by quarter based on enrollment, program needs, and instructor availability.
- Additional administrative hours may be scheduled as needed.
- Some flexibility is available for the right candidate.
- Expected Schedule: Monday through Thursday, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., for approximately 14 hours per week or 28 hours biweekly. Some flexibility may be required based on class schedules, registration periods, and program needs.
Compensation
$15-$17 Hourly.
