State Policy Coordinator

Overview

The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) provides support and services to the social work regulatory community to advance safe, competent, and ethical practices to strengthen public protection.

The State Policy Coordinator reports to the Director of Regulatory Services and provides support to advance the work of the Member Engagement and Regulatory Services Department. The position contributes to the association's regulatory services and governmental affairs program.

Core functions involve coordination of activities in states selected for policy engagement, including management of in-state contractors, development of communications materials, representing ASWB's position before state decision-makers ensuring alignment with policy priorities, and constituent outreach and engagement. The State Policy Coordinator interfaces with state licensing boards and their affiliate agencies, local elected officials and agency representatives, and in-state consultants to achieve program goals.

This position contributes to the internal staff team responsible for regional support networks across member jurisdictions to foster information exchange, an understanding of shared policy goals, and to promote local engagement on issues of importance to the association.

This is NOT a fully remote position.

Key Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree in political science or related field
  • Minimum two years' experience in state or local government relations, or legislative staff experience or state lobbying experience in an association or with professional licensing
  • Excellent writing skills to author testimony and communicate with members/stakeholders/policy makers
  • Demonstrated experience managing advocacy campaigns
  • Extensive knowledge of state government decision-making process
  • Experience working with inter-governmental organizations and managing consultants/ volunteers in multiple locations
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of state legislative, regulatory, governmental, and political processes and operations
  • Self-starter with keen attention to detail
  • Strong public speaking skills to present to large and small member audiences
  • Strong networking and relationship-building skills
  • Strong negotiating skills and demonstrated ability to handle adversarial situations diplomatically
  • Strong writing skills and demonstrated ability to provide written analysis
  • Sound judgment and confidentiality, strategic analytical skills, creative thinking, and a commitment to ethical business practices
  • Advanced MS Office skills

ASWB uses a flexible, hybrid work model, allowing for approved remote work as warranted. While typical business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. are the norm, ASWB promotes a results-based approach to measures of productivity. Must have the ability to work remotely with access to high-speed internet as needed. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties and business demands.
