Shelter Assistant - Services to Abused Families, Inc. (SAFE)
Overview
The Shelter Assistant provides compassionate, trauma-informed support to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and their families within a safe, inclusive environment.
Working closely with the Director of Shelters, this position assists with the daily operations of the shelter, office, and pet kennel to ensure a welcoming, organized, and client-centered space.
The Shelter Assistant promotes safety, dignity, and empowerment for all residents -- human and animal alike.
Responsibilities
- Assist with daily shelter operations, including walk-throughs, inventory, maintaining a clean and safe environment, and completing necessary shelter checklists.
- Monitor and report maintenance needs, safety concerns, and any known violations of shelter rules promptly to the Director of Shelters.
- Welcome and orient new residents, providing an overview of shelter guidelines and available services.
- Offer supportive listening and crisis response, referring residents to advocates or the Director of Shelters as appropriate.
- Assist in facilitation activities, life skills sessions, or support groups as directed by the Director of Shelters.
Administrative Support
- Receives and processes hotline calls and serves as an office receptionist as assigned.
- Participates in rotating on-call shifts. (Reliable cell service required).
- Maintains accurate documentation, including case notes, email logs, and data entry (VADATA) related to client stays, supplies, and shelter needs.
- Supports the Director of Shelters with scheduling, communications, and resource coordination.
- Monitors and reports maintenance needs or safety concerns promptly.
- Assists with donation sorting, storage organization, and supply restocking.
- Participates in SAFE events
Pet Kennel Support
- Assists in the daily care of animals in the shelter.
- Supports clients with pet-related needs, ensuring animals' safety and comfort.
- Maintains kennel cleanliness and inventory of pet food and supplies.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; some college or experience in human services preferred.
- Compassionate and nonjudgmental approach to working with individuals affected by trauma, crisis, or abuse.
- Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriate professional boundaries.
- Must pass a background check to include child and animal safety clearances.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation are required.
- First aid and CPR certification is highly desirable.
- Bilingual English/Spanish desirable, but not required.
Work Environment
- Work is performed in a shelter, office, and kennel setting.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, perform light cleaning, and provide animal care.
- Exposure to emotional and sensitive situations is common; trauma-informed supervision and training are provided.
