Culpeper Mid-Day Lions Honor Two Community Leaders with Melvin Jones Fellowship Awards
The Culpeper Mid-Day Lions honored Frank Reaves Jr. and the late Michael Grant with Melvin Jones Fellowship Awards, recognizing their exceptional service to the community and dedication to the ideals of Lionism.
The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award is the highest form of recognition within Lions Clubs International and embodies humanitarian ideas consistent with the nature and purpose of Lionism. The award honors individuals whose service reflects the values of Melvin Jones, founder of Lions Clubs International.
Frank Reaves Jr. has served as mayor of the Town of Culpeper since January 2022, becoming the first African American to be elected mayor in the town's 262-year history. Before his election as mayor, Reaves invested 28 years in the Virginia Department of Corrections and 21 years at the Culpeper County Sheriff's Office. Reaves has focused his leadership on bringing people together and working to help the town survive and thrive. Throughout his tenure, he has been a visible presence at community events, business grand openings, and organizational meetings, demonstrating his commitment to serving all residents of Culpeper.
Michael Grant proudly served in law enforcement for over 40 years, attending the academy in Albemarle County and then serving the County of Greene before joining the Culpeper Police Department, where he remained until his retirement in 2024. He was well known throughout the community, often seen on his motorcycle making sure everyone slowed down and stayed safe. Grant was a familiar face at many community events, where he enjoyed connecting with others and sharing his love of law enforcement and motorcycles, especially with the youth of Culpeper. He also coached Little League for many years, encouraging and mentoring young players both on and off the field.
Frank received his award with his wife and son present. Michael's award was accepted posthumously by his son and daughter, Eric and Kelly Jo Grant.
