Aging Together’s Annual 5 Over 50 Celebration Honors Older Adults in our Region
Aging Together is excited to announce the details for our 13th annual celebration honoring five outstanding older adults, one from each county in our region. This year's event will take place on September 18, 2025, at the Fauquier Springs Country Club and aligns with Aging Together’s annual meeting.
The celebration is dedicated to highlighting older adults who make a significant impact in their communities, challenge negative stereotypes about aging, and inspire us all. We are proud to introduce our 2025 Honorees:
Sharon Welch Clark, representing Culpeper. Sharon is a beloved and well-known figure in her community, recognized both as a downtown store owner (Pepperberries) and for her deep commitment to "Pamper Me Pink," her own branded decades-old annual event devoted to ensuring mammograms are accessible to everyone. Sharon’s community engagement runs much wider than that though, along with her charisma and boundless benevolent energy that makes Culpeper a better place for so many reasons.
Karen White, representing Fauquier. Karen is co-founder and President of the Afro American Historical Association (AAHA) of Fauquier County. Her extensive research into Fauquier’s African American history is highly impactful, gaining recognition both locally and nationally. Through her work, she has made countless records accessible, enabling hundreds of people to connect with their ancestors and family members. In addition to her historical work, Karen has had a distinguished nursing career and has served on several county boards and committees. She also previously held the position of deputy clerk for the Fauquier County Circuit Court.
Carlyle Weaver, representing Madison. Carlyle is a lifelong Madison native and a dedicated member of the Madison Volunteer Fire Department. He has owned and operated Weaver Works for over 40 years, and recently, he and his business collaborated with volunteers to help contain the wildfire in Madison. Carlyle consistently steps up to support those in need and spearheads impactful community projects. His efforts include establishing the parking lot at the base of Old Rag Mountain and developing Hoover Ridge into an asset for the community and youth. Beyond his professional and volunteer work, Carlyle is a proud supporter of 4H and FFA youth, successfully manages a farm, and is an annual participant in the Madison County Fair.
Mary-Jane Atwater, representing Orange. Mary-Jane has made incredible contributions to the older adult community. She was instrumental in the planning and development of LOWLINC, the village model that supports older adults through the “neighbors helping neighbors model” in Orange. She then played a key role in developing the many programs, services, and events within it. Recognizing the widespread benefits of the "village" concept, Mary-Jane has expanded her support to a broader scale. She actively helps develop new villages through one-on-one mentoring and through her leadership roles with state and national organizations. As Co-Chair of the Virginia Village Collective, Mary-Jane has diligently worked to educate lawmakers about the positive impact of villages and to advocate for funding to both establish new ones and expand existing initiatives. Mary-Jane’s dedication to supporting the older adult community is truly transformative for those who wish to age in place.
Barbarba and Matthew Black, representing Rappahannock. The Blacks are an incredible duo, individually and collectively working to make Rappahannock a better place, effectively doubling their impact. Barbara and Matthew have been deeply involved with the Rappahannock Association for Arts and Community (RAAC), where they have actively provided leadership, and promoted cultural interaction and social engagement through numerous community art and theater events. They also dedicate their time to local schools, helping to secure funding for a wide range of quality programs for our youth. Beyond these efforts, Barbara has been a dedicated supporter of the Rappahannock Food Pantry, while Matthew is an active member of the local fire and rescue squad. Their commitment to the community is truly remarkable, as they consistently open their homes and hearts to support those around them.
“We are truly honored to recognize our community heroes. These individuals are committed to making their communities a better place for everyone and give generously of their time. Their altruistic contributions, born from years of experience and wisdom, ensure we are in good hands. We are excited to celebrate them and all they do,” says Ellen Phipps, Executive Director of Aging Together.
