Stand Up For Mental Health Comedy Show
What’s so funny about mental health?
Culpeper, Virginia –
What’s so funny about mental health? As far as Stand Up for Mental Health (SMH) and Encompass Community Supports are concerned– everything!
Founded by award-winning counsellor and stand-up comic David Granirer, who himself lives with bipolar, SMH teaches stand-up comedy to people with mental health challenges as a way of building confidence and fighting public stigma.
Granirer, in partnership with Encompass has trained six first-time comedians to do stand-up comedy about their mental health journeys.
The comics will perform on September 5 at Laurel Ridge Community College from 7-9 PM.
“This program changes lives,” says Granirer. “There’s something incredibly healing about telling a roomful of people exactly who you are and having them laugh and cheer. Once you’ve done stand-up, you can do anything!”
According to Ashton Morse, Encompass Community Supports’ Director of Clinical Supports, “Partnering with Stand Up for Mental Health has given our community a new, joyful way to talk about mental health. Humor breaks down walls, opens conversations, and reminds us that hope and resilience can be found—even in life’s hardest moments.”
Granirer has won awards for his program in Canada, the US, and Australia, including one from the Governor General of Canada. He was also named one of the 150 Difference Makers in Canadian Mental Health.
